“The Old Empty Barn” - A reference to the famous joke from the BBC’s Comedy Series “Dad’s Army” - It’s a view of the old Ponthir Tinplate Works were some of my ancestors were employed.

“The Old School House” - Common Coed y Paen within the Parish of Llanygybi began life as a “Model Village” set out in the 1850’s in order to try out experimental agricultural methods- It had it’s own church and village school.

“The Quiet Land of Bertholey” - The title of this painting was taken from a Fred’ Hando Newspaper Article/Feature: It’s actually a view from the Treherbert Lane looking towards Wentwood - Bertholey is on the blue ridge in the distance.

“The Smoked Stained Ruins of Bertholey House” - This Georgian Mansion on Wentwood Ridge features in both Arthur Machen’s Fiction and Autobiographical writings: Famously it burned down in 1905 when a cigar ignited the curtains during a Billiard Game.

“The Tumulus” - Arthur Machen had an interest in ancient sites and burial mounds which hold folkloric memories from primordial times: This is another composite image but primarily based on a feature in the landscape between Bassaleg and St Mellons.
